How to use Remove EXIF / location

What is removed, and what stays

GPS coordinates, capture time, camera and lens, serial numbers, software and editing history are all dropped. The rotation flag stays, so the photo doesn’t end up sideways, and so does the colour profile, so the colours stay right. Neither of them says anything about you.

The pixels are not touched

For JPG, PNG and WebP the metadata blocks are cut out of the file and nothing is re-encoded: the image is exactly the same picture, only a little smaller. Other formats, HEIC among them, have to be re-encoded once and come back as JPG.

When it actually matters

The big social platforms strip metadata when you upload, but email attachments, cloud-drive links, chat apps that offer to “send the original” and images you put on your own website do not. If you want to see what a photo is carrying first, read it with View EXIF data and come back.

Questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

Does the quality change?

For JPG and PNG the metadata segments are deleted directly and not a single pixel is touched. Other formats are re-encoded once.

Do photos shared on social media carry my location?

The big social platforms usually strip it on upload, but email, cloud drives and “send original” options do not. Cleaning a photo before you send the original is the safer choice.
