How to use AVIF to JPG / PNG

When an AVIF can’t be opened

AVIF decoding is done by your browser, not by us: Chrome 85+, Safari 16+ and Firefox 93+ can do it. Large AVIFs from some exporters (macOS’s own converter, for instance) are stored as tiles that Chrome fails to draw. Open the same file in Safari or Firefox and it usually converts fine.

Expect the file to get bigger

AVIF compresses better than anything else in common use, so the JPG or PNG you get out will be larger than the file you put in, sometimes several times larger. That is the price of a format that everything can open, not a fault in the conversion.

Convert only what you need to

If the image lives on your own website, keep the AVIF and let old browsers fall back. Convert when something on the other end can’t cope: an older photo editor, an office document, a print shop, or a person whose phone won’t open the file.

Questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

It says the AVIF can’t be opened?

AVIF decoding is done by the browser itself. Chrome 85+, Safari 16+ and Firefox 93+ support it; please update an older browser.
