How to use PNG ↔ JPG
Which direction, and when
PNG to JPG is the one that saves space: photographs and screenshots of photographs shrink a lot with no visible change. Keep PNG for screenshots of text, logos, diagrams and line art, where JPG smears the sharp edges, and for anything that needs a transparent background.
The fill colour for transparent areas
JPG cannot store transparency, so every see-through pixel has to become a real colour. White suits most documents; if the image will sit on a coloured page, pick that colour here and no box will show up around it.
JPG to PNG doesn’t restore anything
PNG stores exactly the pixels it is given, without loss. Detail that JPG compression has already thrown away cannot come back, and the file usually grows several times over. Convert this way only when a tool or a template insists on PNG.
Questions
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
Does converting JPG to PNG make it sharper?
No. PNG only stores the existing pixels without loss. Detail already lost to JPG can’t come back, and the file will actually get bigger.
