How to use Convert to WebP
How much smaller, really
At the same visual quality WebP is usually 25–35% smaller than JPG, and much smaller than PNG for flat-colour graphics. The default quality of 82 is a good balance for images on a web page; raise it to 90 if the picture is the main thing on the page.
Transparency comes along
A transparent PNG stays transparent as WebP. That is the main reason to use it for logos, icons and UI assets, where converting to JPG isn’t an option at all.
Where WebP is a bad idea
Every current browser reads WebP, but some desktop software, print shops and older devices still don’t. For a file you are handing to someone else, JPG remains the safer choice; for your own website, WebP is almost always the better one.
Questions
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
Where can WebP files be opened?
Every modern browser and most image viewers support WebP. If someone can’t open it, just convert it back to JPG.
